Suomen Malmi Oy (Smoy) is a leading company in geological contracting in the Nordic countries. Smoy was established in 1935. Today we are a contracting company
in the Drillcon Group ( www.drillcon.se ) specialised in geological sampling of the soil and bedrock and in geological surveys with modern geophysical equipment. Our main market is in prospecting for mineral deposits, in the mining industry and in engineering geology.
The offices and depot of Smoy are located in Juvanmalmi industrial park in Espoo, along Ringroad III, 30 minutes from the centre of Helsinki and 20 minutes from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Smoy also has a repair shop in Kemi, northern Finland. The production of Smoy takes place mainly at work sites in the field. Ordinarily we have more than 20 active sites at one time. In practice, the majority of our personnel are continuously out on contracts in the field.
Core drillings and geophysical surveying are the main services of Smoy. About one third of the turnover is generated from projects abroad. Smoy has accumulated global experience about working in different conditions with work references from 36 countries on all continents but Antarctica.
The sales of Smoy amounted to 15 million euro in 2007. The average number of personnel was 165. Capital expenditure in new equipment was about 0.95 million euro.
Smoy is a member in e.g. the following organisations: Technology Industries of Finland (Confederation of Finnish Industry and Employers), Metallgruppen (Confederation of Swedish Enterprise), Association of Finnish Extractive Resources Industry, Finnish Tunnelling Association, Finnish Geotechnical Society, Swedish Society for Advanced Drilling (FAB) and Helsinki Chamber of Commerce.
